This file explains how to update your copy of Coach Pro to version 4.0 using this update disk. It also explains what items have changed in version 4.0.
System requirements: Coach Pro 4.0 requires a hard drive, System 6.0.5 or later, MultiFinder (for System 6 users), and a Mac Plus or later computer.
This disk updates an existing version of Coach Pro. The following files must already be in your System Folder in order for Coach Pro to work:
If you do not have these files, you need to purchase a complete set of Coach Pro 4.0 install disks.
IMPORTANT: Disable all virus-detection INITs before you run the Installer. Refer to your virus detection’s user manual if you need instructions.
System 6 users:
Remove the Coach Pro desk accessory from your System file and remove the Coach Pro Helper from your System Folder before running the Installer. If you are using a DA manager (such as Suitcase™ or DA Juggler), you must remove the Coach Pro desk accessory and Coach Pro Helper before you run the Installer. You should also reconfigure the DA manager so it will no longer look for the desk accessory.
System 7 users:
Remove any beta versions of the Coach Pro Extension or the Coach Pro™ Panel from the Extensions folder and Control Panels folder in your System Folder before running the Installer.
To install Coach Professional™ 4.0:
1. Double-click the Installer icon on the Coach Updater Disk.
The Installer splash screen will appear; click OK.
2. Use the options in the Installer dialog box to install Coach Pro.
When the installation is complete, an alert box appears notifying you that you must restart for any changes to take effect.
3. Click Restart to restart your computer.
At startup time, the Coach Pro personalization screen will appear.
4. Type your name, organization, and serial number in the appropriate text boxes and click OK.
You will then be able to use Coach Pro.
The Installer places the following items on your hard drive:
• Coach Pro Extension
If you are using System 6, the Installer places the Coach Pro Extension in your active System Folder. If you are using System 7, the Installer places the Coach Pro Extension in the Extensions folder in your System Folder.
• Coach Pro™ Panel
If you are using System 6, the Installer places the Coach Pro™ Panel in your active System Folder. If you are using System 7, the Installer places the Coach Pro™ Panel in the Control Panels folder in your System Folder.
• Coach Preferences folder
If you are using System 6, the Installer places this folder in your System Folder. If you are using System 7, the Installer places this folder in the Preferences folder in your System folder. The Coach Preferences folder contains two additional folders: Add-On Word Tools and Compatibility Modules.
Add-On Word Tools contains extensions to Coach Pro. Currently this folder contains two files, Coach Hyphenation and Hyphenation Tool, which provide Coach Pro with a hyphenation dictionary and a tool that adds hyphenation capabilities. As new tools for Coach Pro become available, you can add them to this folder.
Compatibility Modules contains extensions that ensure Coach Pro's compatibility with the latest versions of many programs with text-handling capabilities.
• Coach Pro™ 4 Folder
The Installer places the Coach Pro™ 4 Folder on your hard drive. This folder contains the following items:
1. For WordPerfect folder: This folder contains a custom macro which allows Coach Pro to perform batch spell checks in WordPerfect 2.1, and an accompanying Read Me file.
2. Read Me! - Coach Pro 4.0
3. Sample Folder: This folder contains sample files to be used with the Coach Pro tutorial.
4. TeachText application program
Keep your existing BigThesaurus, Concise Definitions, Merriam-Webster dictionary, and User Environment files in their current location on your hard drive.
1. Open the Coach Pro™ Panel.
If you are using System 7, open your System Folder's Control Panels folder and double-click the Coach Pro™ Panel icon. If you are using System 6, open the Apple menu's Control Panel, scroll to the Coach Pro™ icon, and click the Coach Pro™ icon.
The Coach Pro™ Panel will open.
2. Choose the desired settings and click the close box when you are finished.
Please refer to your Spelling Coach™ Professional User Manual for information on the Coach Pro™ Panel settings. These settings are the same as the Control Panel settings found in Coach Pro 3.1, with the following changes:
• Show/Hide Menu Hot Key: Previously called Open Coach Hot Key. When the ON/OFF button is set to ON, you can use this hot key to show or hide the Coach Pro menu in the Finder or any program, regardless of its setting in Auto-Show Menu Options. You can use this hot key to display the Coach Pro menu whenever you want to use Coach Pro. When the menu is showing you can use all the available commands in it.
• Auto-Show Menu Options: Previously called Auto-Open Options. Use these options to choose the programs in which you want the Coach Pro menu to appear automatically, provided that the ON/OFF button is set to ON.
• ON/OFF button: The ON/OFF button in the bottom right corner of the dialog box lets you turn Coach Pro on and off. When you click this button, an alert box appears notifying you that you must restart your computer for your changes to take effect. Turning Coach Pro off and restarting your computer prevents Coach Pro from loading at startup time. Turning Coach Pro on loads it at startup time.
1. System-7 compatible
Coach Pro 4.0 is now System-7 compatible.
2. 32-bit clean
Coach Pro 4.0 is 32-bit clean, meaning it will run when all 32 bits of a memory address are used for addressing (under System 7 you can run Coach Pro with 32-bit addressing turned on).
3. Balloon Help
Under System 7, Balloon Help is available for the commands in the Coach Pro menu.
4. Quadra compatible
Coach Pro 4.0 is now compatible with Apple's Quadra computer.
5. Coach Pro and the Apple menu
Because Coach Pro is no longer a Desk Accessory, you no longer need to choose the Coach Pro command from the Apple menu. When Coach Pro is on, you can show or hide the Coach Pro menu at any time using the Show/Hide Menu Hot Key. Consequently, the Coach Pro command no longer appears in the Apple menu.
If the Coach Pro command is still in the Apple menu after you run the Coach Pro Update Installer, you need to remove the Coach Pro desk accessory from your System file and remove the Coach Pro Helper from your System Folder. If you are using a DA manager (such as Suitcase™ or DA Juggler), you should also reconfigure the DA manager so it will no longer look for the desk accessory.
6. Coach Pro menu's About Coach Pro™… command
The About Coach Pro command in the Coach Pro menu displays the new Coach Pro startup screen. This screen displays the registered user's name, organization, and serial number, as well as the version of Coach Pro you are using. To display additional information, click the lever icon on the right side of the title bar to enlarge the startup screen.
• Library Status indicates whether the Coach Pro dictionary and thesaurus have been loaded into RAM or are on disk.
• Active Host Application indicates which program Coach Pro is currently being used with, and whether Coach Pro can work interactively, perform batch spell checks, or both in that program.
• User Word Status indicates how many words have been added to the User Dictionary and how many have been flagged as ignored during the current work session.
• Add-On Modules Available indicates what files are in the Add-On Word Tools folder.
7. Coach Pro menu's Spell Check Selection command
Clipboard Spell Checking and Correction window
If you are using a program that does not have find-and-replace capabilities, or a program that has find-and-replace capabilities but does not have a Coach Pro Compatibility Module, you can still perform automatic batch spell checks with Coach Pro’s Spell Check Selection command. In order to do so, in the Coach Pro menu’s Preferences dialog box under Other Options, you must set your Guessing Method to Typographic or Phonetic.
When you choose the Spell Check Selection command, Coach Pro places your selected text on the Clipboard and displays it in the Clipboard Spell Checking And Correction window.
When Coach Pro finds a misspelled word, it displays the word and suggested spellings for the word in the Suggest Spelling floating menu. Refer to your Coach Pro manual for information on using this floating menu.
If you select Cancel in the Suggest Spelling menu, you return to the Clipboard Spell Checking And Correction window. You can scroll the window to find misspelled words, select them individually, and press the Suggest Spelling hot key to correct them.
• Click Continue Spell Check to resume the spell check and display the next misspelled word in the Suggest Spelling menu.
• Click Done to display a dialog box asking if you want to paste the corrected text back into your document and warning you that formatting information might be lost if you do so. These options are explained below. If you have not corrected any of the words, you return to your document without pasting the corrected text back into your document.
When the spell check is complete, a dialog box appears asking if you want to paste the corrected text back into your document and warning you that formatting information might be lost if you do so.
• Click Paste Corrections to replace the selected text in your document with the corrected text on the Clipboard.
• Click Don’t Paste to return to your document without pasting the correct text.
• Click Not Done to return to the Clipboard Spell Checking And Correction window. You can select individual words and correct them. Click Continue Spell Check to display the dialog box asking if you want to paste the corrected text back into your document and warning you that formatting information might be lost if you do so. The options in this dialog box are explained above.
8. Coach Pro menu's Selection Tools submenu
This submenu contains options that can be applied to a selection of text. The options in this submenu are available through files in the Add-On Tools folder.
Currently there is one Selection Tools option, the Hyphenate Selection option. This option is equivalent to the Hyphenate Selection command in older versions of Coach Pro; refer to your Coach Pro manual for more information.
9. Coach Pro menu's Single Word Tools submenu
This submenu contains options that can be applied to a single selected word. The options in this submenu are available through files in the Add-On Tools folder.
Currently there is one Single Word Tools option, the Hyphenate Word option. This option is equivalent to the Find Hyphenation command in older versions of Coach Pro; refer to your Coach Pro manual for more information.
10. Analysis window: Status Line
In the Analysis window, the Status Line now displays information about the functions performed by the icons in the Analysis window. For example, if the pointer is on the Stop icon, the Status Line says "Stop The Spell Checking Process."
11. Dictionary window
The Dictionary window contains some new icons.
Show Definitions and Show BigThesaurus™ display the Dictionary and BigThesaurus windows respectively. These icons replace the Magnifying Glass and Chain Link icons. Hyphenation has been moved to the Coach Pro menu for easier accessibility.
12. Preferences dialog box
Several items have changed in the Preferences dialog box, which is available from the Coach Pro menu's Preferences command.
• Spell Check Selection: You no longer need to choose a Spell Check Selection Method from the Preferences dialog box. Coach Pro now performs all batch spell checks with the Automatic method. If a Compatibility Module is available, Coach Pro uses the program's find and replace dialog box to check the document. If no Compatibility Module is available, Coach Pro uses the Clipboard Spell Checking And Correction window to check the document. Because of this, the Spell Check Selection: Method pop-up menu has been removed from the Preferences dialog box.
• List Errors: In earlier versions of Coach Pro, this pop-up menu was called the List Spelling Errors pop-up menu. The same options, As They Are Found and At End Of Check, are available.
• Check Grammar option: Coach Pro's grammar checking capabilities have been incorporated into its spell checking function. This eliminates the need to turn the Check Grammar option on. The Check Grammar pop-up menu has therefore been removed from the Preferences dialog box. During batch spell checks, Coach Pro flags the following grammatical errors: double words not preceded or followed by punctuation, double punctuation, and a comma or period outside of quotation marks. During interactive spell checks, Coach Pro also flags a comma or period outside of quotation marks and all double words as grammatical errors.
• Edit Hot Keys option: The Edit Hot Keys dialog box, available from the Edit Hot Keys button, has been changed according to the commands in the new Coach Pro menu. You can now set hot keys for the following commands: Interactive, Spell Check Selection, Suggest Spelling, Paste Replacement, Find Synonyms, Find Definition, Show Analysis, Show Dictionary, Continue Last Spell Check. You will need to reset your hot keys after running the Coach Pro Update Installer.
This section contains Coach Pro compatibility information and information about using Coach Pro with a particular word processing program.
Removing words from the Added Words window
In some programs, you cannot use the Cut command to remove a word from the Added Words window unless a word in the document is highlighted. This is because some programs, such as BeagleWorks, do not enable the Cut command unless a word in the document is highlighted.
Spell checking in Microsoft Excel
To spell check a selection of text in Microsoft Excel, you must first set your Guessing Method in the Coach Preferences dialog box to Typographic or Phonetic. Next, select the cells in the Excel worksheet which contain the text you want to spell check, and from the Coach Pro menu choose Spell Check Selection. When Coach Pro encounters a misspelled word, the Suggest Spelling menu appears. You can choose any of the options in this menu to correct the misspelled word, except the Dictionary option. During interactive spell checks in Excel in which the Suggest Spelling submenu menu appears, you can also choose any option except the Dictionary option to correct the misspelled word.
WordPerfect 2.1
It is important that you install the Coach Pro 4 Req. Macro in the For WordPerfect folder and assign it the keystroke Command-Option-F. This macro allows Coach Pro to perform batch spell checks correctly in WordPerfect 2.1. The file called “Read Me! - CP4 Req. Macro” explains how to install the macro and assign it the keystroke.
Microsoft Word 5.0
If you cancel a Spell Check Selection sequence and want to resume it using the Continue Last Spell Check hot key, make sure there is no text highlighted in your document and click to place the cursor before the next misspelled word. To find the next misspelled word, choose the Coach Pro menu’s Show Analysis command to display the Analysis window. The next misspelled word is highlighted in the Analysis window.
Microsoft Works 3.0
Coach Pro will only spell check interactively in a Microsoft Works spreadsheet or draw document. If you use the Spell Check Selection or Suggest Spelling commands, Coach Pro will display the Analysis window with the misspelled words, but will not let you correct the words.
During an interactive spell check in a Microsoft Works spreadsheet, you can choose any option in the Suggest Spelling submenu except the Dictionary option to correct the misspelled word.
Coach Pro is fully compatible with Microsoft Works word processor documents.
Nisus
Coach Pro is fully compatible with Nisus Compact 3.31. Coach Pro is not compatible with the Limited Flag or the Complete Flag version of Nisus 3.4.
Publish It! 2.1.9
If you attempt to look up a synonym or definition for a word in your document, the new word might not be replaced correctly. This is because in the process of converting the selected word on the Clipboard to text, Publish It! resets the insertion cursor.
Publish It! Easy
If you use Coach Pro's Find Definition, Find Synonyms, Hyphenate Selection, or Hyphenate Word command, the replacement word might not be placed in your Publish It! Easy document correctly. Instead the page view will change. This is due to a problem Publish It! Easy has interpreting the selected word and the space after it that Coach Pro places on the Clipboard.
Microsoft Works 3.00b29
If you attempt to look up a synonym or definition for a word in your document, or select a small portion of text to spell check in your document, Microsoft Works 3.00b29 will not convert the Clipboard to text and Coach Pro will not be able to check your selection. This is due to a bug in Microsoft Works 3.00b29 that will probably be fixed in the final version.
Taste 1.01a
Taste does not copy single words or small portions of text to the System’s Clipboard. Therefore, if you attempt to look up a synonym or definition for a word in your document, Coach Pro will not be able to check your selection.
